Moving art isn’t like moving boxes. Frames flex, glazing can scratch, and canvases dent. Below is our simple, proven process for getting artwork from A to B safely across New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, and Boston.
1) Packing Basics
- Clean, dry hands or gloves before touching any piece.
- Soft wrap first: glassine or acid-free paper against the art.
- Cushion next: bubble wrap bubbles out so they don’t imprint surfaces.
- Protect the shape: rigid cardboard faces or foam boards on both sides.
- Guard the corners: corner protectors for frames and mirrors.
- Label clearly: “Front,” “Fragile,” and “This Side Up.”
Special Cases
- Mirrors & glazed works: add an “X” tape on glass for containment, then rigid face boards.
- Stretched canvases: no pressure on the canvas surface; protect the back with a board.
- Sculpture & objects: block and pad so nothing can shift inside the wrap.
- Pairs/sets: pack together, but keep individual pieces separated with rigid layers.
2) Loading the Vehicle
- Clean, padded cargo area with non-slip flooring.
- Upright travel: large frames and mirrors ride vertically in padded lanes.
- No stacking on art: nothing heavy goes on top of framed pieces—ever.
- Secure everything: use straps and dividers so items cannot slide or tip.
- Short dwell time: limit how long art sits curbside or in direct sun.
3) Driving Habits That Protect Your Art
- Smooth starts and stops: gentle acceleration and braking reduce shock.
- Choose calmer lanes: avoid rough shoulders and sudden lane changes.
- Watch the road surface: slow for potholes, speed bumps, and expansion joints.
- Smart routing: plan bridges/tunnels and timing to minimize stop-and-go traffic.
- Quick check-ins: re-tighten straps after the first 10–15 minutes and at major stops.
- Temperature care: in hot or cold weather, let pieces acclimate briefly before unwrapping.
4) Arrival & Unloading
- Clear path first: simple floor protection on traffic routes if needed.
- Staging zone: set a clean, padded area to unwrap and check condition.
- No rush: unwrap one piece at a time; keep packing nearby until placement is confirmed.
Quick Prep Checklist for Clients
- Identify pieces and take quick photos (front/back) for reference.
- Clear a small staging space near the entry if possible.
- Share any tight corners, stairs, or small elevators in advance.
- Note fragile frames, loose backings, or special handling needs.
